Two juveniles face 14 counts of car burglaries

LONG BRANCH - Two juveniles are facing charges for a string of car burglaries in the city.

On May 6, police responded to a Morford Avenue residence at approximately 2:30 a.m. after a Long Branch homeowner reported to police that his car alarm had been set off, according to police reports.

Upon investigation, police discovered that someone had entered the victim's vehicle, and the glove box and center console were found open, authorities said. The victim said that he had left his vehicle unlocked when he came home that night.

Police canvassed the area of the reported car burglary and found two parked vehicles on Gerard Avenue with their interior lights on. A third vehicle on Oakwood Avenue was also found with its interior lights on, and two males were standing next to the car looking inside, authorities said.

When the two males saw the police, they fled the area on foot. Officer Marshall Brown apprehended one of the males after a chase through backyards and over fences, authorities said.

The 17-year-old suspect was taken to police headquarters, where Brown recovered property inside the backpack of the accused, believed to be proceeds from car burglaries, including a computer keyboard, cash, a digital camera and sunglasses, authorities said.

A second juvenile, 16, turned himself in at police headquarters with a parent the next morning.

The two juveniles were charged with approximately 14 counts of burglaries; the burglaries occurred between 1 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. on May 6.

Police believe that the juveniles targeted unlocked cars in a two-block radius, authorities said.
