Local man arrested for stealing tools from Sears

OCEAN TOWNSHIP - An Asbury Park man is under arrest after township police received reports that he was allegedly stealing hundreds of dollars worth of tools from a Sears department store.

At approximately 11:54 a.m. on April 20, Terry Garret, 42, of Asbury Park, was discovered concealing tools by employees of Sears in the Seaview Mall on Route 35, according to police reports.

When approached by store employees about the tools, Garret reportedly ran outside of the building and toward a bicycle he left in front of the store, authorities said.G

arret was followed outside of the building where Sears Loss Prevention Manager Timothy Puff confronted him. Garret reportedly turned toward Puff and grabbed him by the throat, authorities said.

Puff struggled with Garret until other Sears employees arrived to assist him and detain Garret. Puff was not injured during the struggle.

Garret, who was found to be in possession of $481 worth of tools belonging to the store, was arrested at the scene by Ocean Township Police Officer Theodore Malony and charged with robbery, authorities said.

Garret was also found to have an outstanding warrant out for his arrest from Asbury Park for $89, according to reports. His bail was set at $25,000.
