City DPW goes green by recycling electronics
LONG BRANCH - The city was expected to launch a newrecycling programon Earth Day to help members of the community play a part in keeping the environment green.
The Long Branch Department of Public Works (DPW), in conjunctionwith the city of Long Branch Green Initiative, planned to start a new Electronics Recycling Program on April 22. Electronic Waste is the fastestgrowing portion of the solid waste stream, according to a press release from the DPW. Electronic waste consists of discarded computers, keyboards,mice,monitors, scanners, printers, cables, laptops, televisions, radios, telephones and VCR's.
Residents and businesses in the community, with identification, can drop off electronics at the DPW facility on Atlantic Avenue, between Ludlow Street and Sixth Avenue, for environmentally safe recycling. The facility is openMonday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday from9 a.m. to 1 p.m. aFormore information, call the DPWat (732) 571-6520.
"Discarded electronic waste presents problems for all life because there are toxins in all electronics," the release states. "Improperly handling discarded electronics, such as dismantlingwithout proper controls or simply tossing thematerials in the trash, expose hazardous chemical compounds known to negatively affect human and environmental health.
"When released into the environment, the toxic components pose a threat today and tomorrow, as well as for future generations," it states.
Toxins inside electronics include lead, mercury, cadmium, nickel and zinc.
