Fellow horse owner worried about local rescue horse
As a horse owner and lover, my first reaction was to support this couple and their desire to keep their "pet," but as I read the story it raised several concerns. First, though Cocoa Puffs seems small and cute, he is not a dog. He a horse, and horses should not be considered pets. They have very specific needs.

The photograph indicates that Mrs. Owens may not be experienced with horses, as it clearly shows the incorrect use of the lead line. Horses - no matter what their size - require room for exercise. Three minis on 1 acre is not the same thing as one mini on a third of an acre. Also if the entire property is a half acre, a portion of that is occupied by the house, driveway and front lawn, so how much room does this little guy really have? It must also be remembered that horses are herd animals, and most horses need the company of other horses. Manure management is another concern. What kind of fencing is used?

It is admirable that the Owens have rescued this horse and want to provide him a good home, but he would probably be better off on a horse farm. There are many good boarding facilities in this county. I hope that they can find a good solution and enjoy him for many years to come.
