High school students to attend event at Mon. U WEST LONG BRANCH- Mon-mouth University is scheduled to host the 46th annual Monmouth Junior Science Symposium (MJSS) on April 3 and April 4. The event's technical sessions in Pollak Theatre include presentations of student research papers and two guest speakers. The MJSS is cosponsored by Monmouth University, Fort Monmouth and Naval Weapons Station Earle. The primary goal of theMJSS is to promote research and experimentation in the sciences, engineering and mathematics at the high school level, and to publicly recognize students for outstanding achievement. Schools are welcome to register and attend as observers at www.monmouth.edu/mjss. Held at both Monmouth University and Fort Monmouth, the event features 10 original student research paper presentations, six research poster presentations, and technical lectures by distinguished guest speakers. This years speakers include William Schindler, Ph.D., Monmouth University, Department of History and Anthropology - "Deciphering theArchaeological Record: Experimental Archaeology as a Viable Research Tool"; GaryW. Lewandowski, Ph.D., Psychology Department, Monmouth University - "Relationship Research: From Initial Attraction to Break-Up"; and Mr. James Danch, Colonia High School- "The Making of King Kong: History, Science and Ingenuity." In addition to the presentations, students will tour state-of-the-art laboratories at Monmouth University, Fort Monmouth and Naval Weapons Station Earle. The MJSS is one of 48 regional symposia held nationwide and coordinated by the Junior Science & Humanities Symposia (JSHS) division of the Academy of Applied Science. MJSS is funded by Monmouth University, the United States departments of the Army, Navy and Air Force. More than 350 junior scientists and their advisers, representing over 40 high schools throughout central and southern New Jersey, annually attend the symposium. The JSHS is a highly accomplished national program that sets a standard for academic excellence. It connects researchers and educators located in university settings, government laboratories and private research centers with talented and motivated high school students and their teachers. Every year, more than 10,000 students participate in the Regional Symposiums held on university campuses across the country including Alaska, and the Department of Defense schools in Europe and the Pacific.
Participating in the JSHS program offers students and their teachersmany benefits. Over $340,000 in scholarships and cash awards are presented to regional and national winners each year making the program an attractive opportunity for motivated students who want to pursue higher education in the areas of science, engineering and mathematics. |
