Fire causes $100K in damages

EATONTOWN - Police have determined that a deep fryer was the cause of a fire last week at the Cluck University Chicken restaurant on Route 36.

The fire was ruled an accidental grease fire and caused approximately $100,000 worth of damages to the restaurant, according to police reports.

On Feb. 4 at approximately 2:10 a.m., a cab driver passing the restaurant witnessed heavy smoke coming from the structure and called police to report a possible fire, according to police reports.

Upon arrival, Eatontown Patrolman David Brown observed a fire and found all of the doors and windows at the building to be locked, according to reports.

The Eatontown Fire Department, First Aid Squad and Fire Police arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire, according to reports.

At approximately 3:11 a.m., fire marshals Rudy Trask and Hank Stryker entered the structure to investigate the cause of the fire, according to reports, which state that the blaze was determined to have started underneath a deep fryer.

No injuries were reported at the scene, according to reports.
