'College Goal Sunday' to be held in Long Branch Attendees of Feb. 10 event qualify for $500 educational award
LONG BRANCH - The third annual New Jersey College Goal Sunday is scheduled to be held at seven sites across the state on Feb. 10, including at Long Branch High School on Indiana Avenue.
Brookdale Community College will be hosting the event at Long Branch High School in the media center for Monmouth County families.
The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., and the day is dedicated to providing low-income students with assistance in filing financial aid forms for college. Financial aid officers will be on hand to assist families in filling out forms and to explain the financial aid process.
A snow date of Feb. 24 has been scheduled.
Other areas hosting the event include Camden County Community College, New Jersey City University, New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, Rutgers University in New Brunswick, Passaic County Community College in Paterson, and Mercer County Community College in Trenton.
One $500 educational award, to be used for fall college enrollment, will be given out at each site at the end of the day to one of the students who attend the event.
Over 160 volunteers from the financial aid community assisted more than 500 families with their financial aid forms last year, according to a press release from Brookdale Community College.
The event is funded by a grant from the Lumina Foundation and is sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Financial Aid Administrators and New Jersey's Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, according to the release.
"College Goal Sunday would not be possible without the support of the higher-education community, especially all the hard-working financial aid administrators who are volunteering their help Sunday to help these students," said Debra Wulff, statewide coordinator for College Goal Sunday.
"We are also appreciative of each of our host colleges, without whose support Goal Sunday would be impossible," Wulff said.
College Goal Sunday is a nationwide project that began in Indiana in 1989 and has since expanded to nearly 40 states. Its premise is to encourage more students, especially those from low-income communities, to file financial aid forms, according to the release.
The project is run entirely by volunteers and a grant from the Lumina Foundation, according to the release.
