Outstanding community leaders recognized
Bette Ivory, volunteer for Lunch Break in Red Bank, is among the community leaders who will be honored by The Brookdale Community College Foundation.

Ivory will receive the Community Service Award, as one of the exceptional Jersey Shore community leaders feted at the Friday, March 14, annual Wilbur Ray Scholarship Dinner at Branches, West Long Branch.

Sgt. Wilbur Ray was a longtime, devoted member of the Brookdale Community College Police Department and active in numerous Long Branch organizations. He was a member of Trinity AME Church, the Liberty Community Center, Long Branch Civic and Cultural Association, the Afro-American Society, the Long Branch Board of Adjustment, Little League and the Monmouth County Democratic Executive Committee.

Each year, the Brookdale Community College Foundation awards Wilbur Ray Memorial Scholarships to assist Monmouth County minority high school graduates and students attending Brookdale Community College.

The scholarships may be used for tuition, fees and books. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming Monmouth County high school senior who will be attending the college in the coming fall and four $500 scholarships to current students.

In addition to Ivory, the honorees and categories for 2008 recognition are:

Business Service Award, Robert J. Harrison, Asbury Park, chairman & publisher of Harrison Communications, Publisher Shore African American Magazine.

Community Service Organization, Euphrates Project Inc., Asbury Park, the Rev. Sandra Manuel.

Community Service Award, Gail Oliver, Asbury Park, Midtown Urban Renaissance Corp.

Criminal Justice Service Award, the Rev. Evelyn Hines, Freehold, women's inmate counselor at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.

Educational Service Award, Avery W. Grant, member of the Long Branch Board of Education; Cecelia Harrington, teacher at Green Grove Elementary School, Long Branch.

Government Service Award, Carl Jennings, director of Recreation and human services, city of Long Branch; Carolyn Ellington, Neptune WIB program administrator for Monmouth County.

Healthcare Service Award, Marta Cuellar Silverberg, Long Branch, executive director, Monmouth Family Health Center; Louise Shrivers, coordinator of the Office of Volunteer Services at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

Outstanding Student Award, James Brandon, Neptune, BCC student ambassador; Ogugua Osefoh, Atlantic Highlands, copresident, Black Student Union; Anabel Rosario, Asbury Park, Wilbur Ray Scholarship Recipient; Stella Mensah, Parlin, copresident, Black Student Union.
