Walk/run to benefit brain tumor research

OCEANPORT - - The Second Annual "Kortney's Challenge" 2-mile fun run and walk will be held at Blackberry Bay Park in Oceanport Sept. 8.

Pre-registration check-in and sameday registration starts at 2 p.m. with the race to follow at 3 p.m. Rain date is Sept. 9.

The event will be held in memory of Kortney Rose Gillette who was a 9-yearold student at Wolf Hill Elementary School. On April 27, 2006, four months after being diagnosed with terminal brainstem glioma, Kortney died as a result of the pediatric brain tumor.

To celebrate Kortney's life, the "Caring For Kortney" foundation initiated "Kortney's Challenge" last September. More than 500 people participated and the event raised more than $16,000 which was used to build "Kortney's Playground" at the Wolf Hill Elementary School.

Funds from this year's race will benefit pediatric brain tumor research and awareness. Also, all of the miles walked by the participants will be donated to the International Brian Tumor Alliance's Walk Around the World for Brain Tumors, a London-based alliance supporting brain tumor advocacy groups.

This year's Kortney's Challenge will kick off the Oceanport Summer's End Festival which runs the same day from 4 to 9:30 p.m. The festival features family entertainment, food and fireworks.

For more information about the Kortney Rose Foundation, call Kristen Gillette, Kortney's mother, at (732) 222-1491, email kortneyroseorg@aol.com, or visit www.KortneyRoseFoundation.org.
