Suspect in home invasion indicted

LONG BRANCH - A city man was indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury this month for a Keyport home invasion robbery.

On Aug. 20, Choyce Schwartz, 35, was charged with conspiracy, armed robbery, criminal restraint, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, and impersonating a law enforcement officer, according to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.

If convicted of armed robbery, Schwartz faces a maximum potential sentence of 20 years in prison and would have to serve 85 percent of that sentence before becoming eligible for parole, according to the release.

If convicted of armed robbery, he faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the press release, and the additional charges carry up to another 16 1/2 years imprisonment.

The indictment also charges Abenaa Higgs, 34, Lakewood, and Lawana Harris, 37, Newark, with receiving stolen property and fencing. Those charges carry a possible five years in prison if convicted, according to the press release.

The charges are in connection with a Jan. 7 home invasion at a Second Avenue home in Keyport, in which an investigation was conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, in conjunction with the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Keyport, Tinton Falls, Lakewood, Freehold Borough and Atlantic City police departments.

The investigation revealed that three men, one of whom posed as a police officer, forced their way into a home at approximately 11:30 p.m., according to police. At least two of the men were armed with handguns when they entered the home, which was occupied at the time by two men and one woman.

The intruders bound the woman and one of the men with duct tape and then proceeded to ransack the residence, according to the press release.

The other man who was in the home at the time of the invasion was in the basement and was unaware of what was transpiring, according to police.

The accused allegedly stole cash and several pieces of jewelry and then sold the proceeds of the robbery at several pawnshops in Atlantic City, according to reports.

Schwartz was arrested outside Higgs' residence on Feb. 16 and is being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in lieu of $250,000 bail. Higgs and Harris are both free on their own recognizance, according to reports.

An arraignment will be scheduled within 45 days, according to the release.
