Piece of Long Branch history on auction block

CHRIS KELLY staff Historic Casey Jones restaurant will be auctioned Aug. 22.
LONG BRANCH - The historic Casey Jones restaurant property on Morris Avenue will be on the auction block Aug. 22.

The corner property, located three blocks from the beach, will be auctioned off by order of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court at 1 p.m. at the restaurant site, according to Maximillian M. Spann Jr., president of Max Spann Real Estate & Auction Co., Clinton.

"The location of this property offers a tremendous amount of different opportunities for the property," said Spann in a recent interview.

The restaurant has been operating in the historic structure for some 20 to 30 years, Spann said. The site is the original home of the Long Branch Inn and is more than 100 years old, according to a press release from Spann's firm.

The building is constructed with parts of old railroad cars, according to Spann, and among the interior features is an original clock from Pennsylvania Station in New York.

In addition to the restaurant, a railroad caboose, box cars, the clock and bars will also be auctioned off.

The property is zoned for a restaurant, retail, professional or drugstore establishment, Spann explained. The restaurant liquor license can also be purchased the day of the auction, according to Spann.

"The corner commercial location between the train station, the hospital and the beach makes it a great investment," Max Spann, vice president of operations, said in the release. "Long Branch is a vibrant community, and this is an ideal location for either another restaurant or a commercial enterprise."
