Monmouth Beach mulls curfew
BY LIZ SHEEHAN
Correspondent

MONMOUTH BEACH - Prompted by complaints from residents about noise and groups of youths gathering in some sections of the borough, the Board of Commissioners is considering enacting a curfew for those age 16 and under.

Police Chief Richard White said Tuesday that in addition to the complaints, officials were concerned about safety.

He said that the town is "trying to get a message to parents" to correct the situation, but was getting things "in line" in case there was "a need to go to curfew."

White said he had presented the complaint information from the past year to the commissioners, and the situation would be reviewed at the next commissioners' meeting "to see where we want to go."

The commissioners are scheduled to meet Sept. 11.

The chief said that the problem of groups of youths gathering has always been an issue but gradually had become worse in the past year or two.

White said we would "rather parents address "the problem, but when the town tried to put together a committee to look into the issue, "the response wasn't overwhelming."

He said there were some youths from out of town who were involved, but it is "our kids" who are the majority of those causing the problem.

White said the curfew would be at 10 p.m. for those 16 or under and there would be "exceptions within reason."

He said other towns in the area have curfews.

James Pigott, the deputy police chief in Keansburg, said that town has a curfew for those under 18.

From May 15 to Sept. 15, he said, the curfew is midnight to 6 a.m., and from Sept. 15 to May 15 the curfew is from midnight to 6:30 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

As the town considers restrictions on youths who live here, it is also planning more entertainment for them.

Mayor Susan Howard said Monday that the borough will be holding three events on Saturday evenings at the town beach club for borough students or summer residents in grades six, through nine, the last of which will include volleyball games and a bonfire.
