Why does the ocean have salt in it? Where does sand come from? These and many other topics will be discussed by children's author Lisa Mullarkey at the Ocean Township branch of the Monmouth County Library Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. as she introduces her new book, "Splashing by the Shore." The family-oriented presentation includes songs, sand art and origami. The library is located at 701 Deal Road, and the program is free and open to the public. The Deal Historical Society will host special guest Sean McHugh, local archeologist, in a program about his work on several important N.J. digs Monday, Aug. 13. Included will be the current dig in Bordentown at the former Bonaparte estate. The annual National Night Out Against Crime will take place in Long Branch Aug. 7, 6-9 p.m., at Slocum Park on Broadway. The event is being hosted by the Long Branch Police Department, Monmouth Medical Center and the United Neighbors Inc.

Temple Beth El in Oakhurst will host a game of Texas Hold 'em Aug. 7 at 7 p.m., at 301 Monmouth Road. A cooking demo and tasting with Jesse Novak will be held Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. at Jesse's Café, Brighton Avenue, West End section of Long Branch, to benefit the city's public library. Novak, the chef and owner of the café, will teach the basic steps for cooking one of her signature meals that will be followed by a tasting. Novak's new cookbook, "Spicing Without Fear," will be available for purchase and signing. Tickets are $5; proceeds will benefit the library. The Shana Wasserman Swim will be held Sunday at the Monmouth Beach Bathing Pavilion, Ocean Avenue at Valentine Street, Monmouth Beach. Start time is 8 a.m.; registration begins at 7 a.m. The 1-mile ocean swim, 100-yard ocean dash (fun swim) and pool swim-a-thon are presented by the Monmouth Beach Park Improvement Fund and the Monmouth Beach Beautification Committee. Proceeds to benefit park and beautification projects in Monmouth Beach. Entry Fee: $20 for preregistration before Aug. 3; $25 race day; $15 100-yard dash only. T-shirts to first 200 swimmers. Rain date: Aug. 12.
