LONG BRANCH - A Rutgers University assistant football coach is facing assault charges after being arrested at a Long Branch bar last weekend.

Christopher Demarest, 42, of Piscataway, was arrested at approximately 2:30 a.m. July 14 after Long Branch police officers were called to the scene of a domestic assault at the Avenue bar in Pier Village on Ocean Avenue, according to a press release from the Long Branch Police Department.

Demarest was charged with domestic violence simple assault after an off-duty detective with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office observed an altercation at the bar between a man and a woman, according to the press release.

The detective observed Demarest allegedly grabbing and pushing the female inside the bar, and security staff was forced to escort the accused out of the premises, according to the police report.

Long Branch police responded to the scene, located the female and observed bruises and abrasions on her arms. The female victim refused medical attention and also refused to apply for a restraining order.

Demarest was released from jail later that morning after posting 10 percent of the $2,500 bail, according to the police report, which states that a court date is to be scheduled at a later time.
