| 180, Turning Lives Around held its Annual Recognition Breakfast recently to honor dedicated volunteers for their efforts in supporting 180's mission.
Linda Milstein, vice president of Brookdale Community College, and Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck (R-12) presented J.C. Williams, coordinator of the 180 Makeda Outreach Program for 180 Turning Lives Around, with the Wynona M. Lipman Award in recognition of service in ending violence against women for the program, which assists women of color with domestic violence issues. She was among the many volunteers honored by 180 which provides shelter, counseling, protection, education and advocacy those affected by domestic violence and sexual assault. The Ocean Township branch of the Monmouth County Library, 701 Deal Road, is hosting a five-part book discussion series, "Your Heart's Desire: Sex and Love in Jewish Literature."
The discussion topic July 16 at 7 p.m. will be "The Little Disturbances of Man" by Grace Paley. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Nelly Segal. "Family History" by Dani Shapiro will be discussed by the Adult Book Club July 30 at 7 p.m. The novel tells the story of Rachel Jensen, a mother who cannot stop her family and life from slowly falling apart in front of her. The programs are free and open to the public. Copies of the books may be borrowed from the library.

The Long Branch Concordance (LBC) is seeking volunteers to perform various clerical/receptionist duties at its Broadway office. Depending on skill, duties will include greeting visitors, organizing the resource library and family room, answering phones, data entry, typing letters and filing. The Concordance is also is offering volunteer and experimental learning opportunities for students ages 18 and older through its 2007 Summer Leadership Institute conducted from June to August. The Long Branch Housing Authority (LBHA) is accepting proposals to perform accounting services for a one-year period beginning Oct. 1 to Sept. 30, 2008, which will be renewable for an additional one year.
Only sealed proposals from qualified accounting firms will be accepted until 3 p.m. on June 29 at the LBHA offices, P.O. Box 337, Garfield Court, Long Branch 07740.

Committee members are busy planning the Monmouth County Historical Association's 32nd Annual Garden Party, to be held July 22 in Locust. Proceeds from the Garden Party will enable the Freehold-based MCHA to fulfill its mission of education and preservation. Annually, the association reaches over 9,000 school children with educational programs presented in classrooms, and at its five historic sites.

Plans for the 2008 New Jersey Marathon kicked off last week with news that one of the world's leading automated timing and scoring systems will be used for the 12th annual racing event to be held next year in Long Branch.
Marathon organizers teamed with CompuScore to bring the internationally recognized ChampionChip System to the 26.2-mile marathon and its two companion events, the Long Branch Half Marathon and the four- and three-person Marathon Relay to be held May 4, according to a press release from the New Jersey Marathon organization.
