Jake Healy and brother Colton
Stacy Gemma and SG2 in The Grove in Shrewsbury held an Ice Cream Social June 2 and raised more than $1,000 to help with medical expenses incurred by the family of Jake Healy of Ocean Township. The 11-year-old is waging an ongoing battle with leukemia. SG2 arranged to have an ice cream truck for the day and all ice cream purchases directly benefited Jake and the Healy family. Oakhurst Foodtown donated ice cream bars, and the Sea Gull's Nest at Sandy Hook donated Italian ices to support the cause.

Jake was first diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5 and is now in remission at The Valerie Fund Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch. Anyone interested in making a donation can contact Robin West at (732)741-8686 for more information.

The Italian American Memorial Association in Long Branch held its annual Memorial Day observance May 27 at its building on West End Avenue.

Louis Pullano, vice president, made the opening remarks. West Long Branch Mayor Janet Tucci was the guest speaker and called on Americans to renew their dedication to the original spirit of the holiday.

The Greater Township of Ocean Democratic Club (serving Ocean, Allenhurst, Interlaken and Loch Arbour) will present "How to Be an Effective Constituent Lobbyist - Speak Up and Be Heard" presented by Denise Hawkins, president/CEO of Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at the West Park Recreation Complex, 615 W. Park Ave., Oakhurst, in the Recreation Center (side entrance).
