Fatal crash under police investigation

LONG BRANCH - Police are investigating whether excessive speed contributed to a motor vehicle accident on Westwood Avenue, which resulted in the death of a 20-year-old city male.

On May 26 at approximately 7:50 p.m., police responded to the area of Westwood and Hollywood avenues for numerous reports of a motor vehicle accident.

Anthony T. Cummings was operating a 2006 Ford Focus and was traveling northbound on Westwood Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and stuck a utility pole near Hollywood Avenue, according to police reports.

Cummings was ejected from the vehicle, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Also in the vehicle was passenger Luis Rivera, 23, of Long Branch. Rivera sustained minor injuries as a result of the accident.

According to police, it was not known if Cummings and Rivera were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

The Monmouth County Serious Accident Crash Reconstruction Scene Team was called in to investigate the crash, and Long Branch Police Officer Joe Kennedy and Sgt. Frank Passantino investigated the scene for the Long Branch Police Department.
