The Long Branch Housing Authority, in conjunction with the city of Long Branch and Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey, will host the annual Back 2 School Festival while observing Long Branch Day on Sept. 8 from noon to 5 p.m. The citywide celebration will take place at Jerry Morgan Park on Liberty Street and Monmouth Avenue.
The festival will include rides, games, activities, entertainment, local vendors and distribution of school supplies. In addition, various social agencies will provide health screenings and giveaways to children.

Long Branch will be participating in the 12th annual "Kids Day America/International" on May 19 from noon to 3 p.m. at Festival Plaza in Pier Village.
The event will promote a health, safety and environmental awareness day and will include food, prizes, face painting, computerized spinal screenings and handouts on child health, safety and environmental issues.
The event will also offer free child ID cards and photos as well as free fingerprinting by the Long Branch Police Department.

The Ronald McDonald House of Long Branch and New Brunswick will hold its "Kids Helping Kids" walk with Ronald at Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in Jackson May 20 at 9 a.m. Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m.

Students at Monmouth University in West Long Branch raised $4,850 for the Alyssa's Angels Foundation to help rebuild a playground for children with special needs at Conway Park in West Long Branch.
The money was raised through the annual Greek Week Penny Wars event in which students place dollars and silver coins in their own fraternity or sorority jugs outside the student center during Greek Week, while putting pennies in the jugs of other fraternities. All bills and silver change are positive points and the pennies are negative points.
The event raised $5,100 with $250 going to the West Long Branch First Aid Squad for their help during the week's events and the rest going to Alyssa's Angels.

The Oceanport Democratic Club unanimously elected Ed Miller president to serve for the remainder of the year.
The 2007 officers are Vice President Gary LaBruno, Secretary Meg Bedell and Treasurer Phil Apruzzi. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the club can contact Miller at (732) 870-0235 or attend a meeting. Meetings are held at 8 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Oceanport Community Center on Tohican Place and Iroquois Avenue.

Meet Leslie A. Morris at the long-awaited signing for the book "How Ya Like Me Now!," Sunday, May 20, at Branches, 123 Monmouth Road, West Long Branch. In addition to Morris, who will discuss her book, guest speakers include Alfred A. Edmond Jr., vice president and chief editor at Black Enterprise Magazine; Joseph Ferraina, superintendent, Long Branch Public Schools; Theodora Apostolocus, retired guidance counselor, Long Branch High School; Jerome Hamlin, retired police officer, Long Branch, and other guests.
The event is free and light refreshments will be served.
