Walk to Life set for May 20

Ezra Abraham
OCEAN TOWNSHIP - - The Ezra Abraham "To Life" Foundation will sponsor the second annual 2.7-mile walk around Allenhurst in memory of Stella Liniado on Sunday, May 20, beginning at 10 a.m.

A 7-year-old girl from Brooklyn, N.Y., Stella passed away this winter after bravely battling leukemia. Stella's first-grade class will begin the walk at 10 a.m. sharp, followed by the rest of the walkers. The walk will begin at the Allenhurst boardwalk (the intersection of Cedar Avenue and Ocean Place).

"By honoring Stella's memory, we are taking a step toward healing our own sadness as well as continuing to make a difference. When something tragic like this happens, we are all affected," says Sari Shamah of West Deal, a board member of the Ezra Abraham "To Life" Foundation.

During the course of Stella's illness, 6,000 people came out to be tested for a bone marrow transplant. When the Ezra Abraham "To Life" Foundation heard of Stella's wish for an iPod, they presented her with one in the hospital, downloaded with her favorite songs.

Registration for the Walk for Life is $18, and walkers are encouraged to enlist as many sponsors as possible. Proceeds will go toward the foundation.

The Ezra Abraham "To Life" Foundation aims to help ease the suffering of children battling life threatening diseases. The foundation was created by Ezra Abraham of Ocean Township, who died at age 23 after a seven-year battle with cancer.

One of the "To Life" Foundation's primary missions is to give back to the organizations that helped Ezra in his time of need.

During his sickness, Ezra experienced the despair of being hospitalized for long periods of time. He started selling green rubber bracelets engraved with the words "Pray for Ezra" to raise money. His goal was to provide teens with a positive distraction during their long, lonely stays in the hospital.

The Ezra Abraham "To Life" Foundation is planning the construction of a teen lounge at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.
