Police: Altercation ends in hit-and-run

OCEAN TOWNSHIP - Police were called to Wanamassa Point Road March 19 at 2:17 a.m. in response to a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

A resident who witnessed the incident described the vehicle as a 1993 white Ford pickup truck. Officer Mark Del Tin arrived on the scene and found a 28-year-old Wanamassa Point Road resident sitting in the roadway with what appeared to be a broken left leg.

The officer learned from another witness at the scene that Michael A. Clark, 19, was operating the Ford pickup. The witness also alleged that Clark intentionally hit the victim with his truck following some type of dispute in the street.

A short time later, Sgt. Francis Sprague and Officer Kevin Donohoe stopped Clark at the intersection of Deal Road and Route 35. The Tinton Falls man was subsequently arrested and taken to the Ocean Township police station for processing.

According to police, further investigation revealed that Clark and the victim had been exchanging words in the street as Clark was dropping off his girlfriend. Police said Clark had, in fact, left the area after the exchange and allegedly returned a short time later in an agitated state.

According to police, Clark then struck the victim with his pickup truck, pinning him against another parked vehicle, then left scene. The Wanamassa First Aid Squad transported the victim to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Clark was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, failing to report the crash, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. He was later released on $25,000 bail.
