The Monmouth Beach School PTA will be hosting its annual three-mile run on May 12 at 9 a.m. The run has been renamed the Shana Wasserman Memorial Run in memory of former 19-year old resident Shana Wasserman, who died tragically in December of bacterial meningitis.

Shana was a freshman at Green Mountain College in Vermont where she majored in Environmental Studies and competed on the cross country and swimming teams.

Shana's warmth and commitment was also very evident in Monmouth Beach. She was a swim instructor at Little Monmouth Beach Club where she touched the lives of many children and adults alike.

Please pick up registration forms at Monmouth Beach Borough Hall or online at mbschool.org. To be guaranteed a T-shirt, please register by April 27 (tickets are $15 for run, $10 for kids races) and show your support for Monmouth Beach School and Shana. Food and refreshments will be available. There will be educational material available on bacterial meningitis at the run, as well as the opportunity to donate to the Shana Wasserman Foundation.

The Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering an updated Sports First Aid course for high school coaches who need certification in that area. The course is also open to any other sports coaches who are interested in receiving this type of certification.

This course will provide study and proper training for coaches working in high schools to ensure the safety of student athletes and to improve the overall quality of the interscholastic sports program. Beginning in the 2006-07 school year, all new coaches will have one year to successfully complete a course in Sports First Aid.

For a discounted cost of $25, the course is available from the Red Cross at Edge Sports Academy and Health Club in Eatontown. This class fulfills the state-mandated Sports First Aid certification. This Sports First Aid course will be held on Sunday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The course will teach coaches how to identify life-threatening bleeding, signals of shock, signals of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, and signals of sudden illness along with many other important life-saving techniques.

For more information, contact Jessica Revoir at (732) 493-9100, ext. 255 or e-mail jessicar@jerseycoast-redcross.org.
