Shore landscapes at Beacon Fine Arts

"Neighbors Across the Marsh"
A show of vibrant landscape paintings by Sharon Hathaway will open at Beacon Fine Arts Gallery in Red Bank Saturday.

Hathaway's impressionistic paintings capture scenes of the unique Jersey Shore landscape from salt marshes to cottage gardens..

A transplant to Middletown from the Midwest, Hathaway earned a degree in studio arts from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn.

In St. Paul, Minn. she worked as a framer and exhibited in shows including the highly competitive Northern Lights juried art shows. In 1996, she won the show's Award of Excellence.

Hathaway worked primarily in oils and watercolor and concentrated on portraiture and drawing before moving to New Jersey in 2000. She has segued to acrylics and changed focus to landscape painting. Inspired by walks exploring the Shore area, she creates impressionist paintings in soft and vibrant colors that capture common, but uncommonly beautiful, scenes.

She joined Beacon Fine Arts as gallery manager two years ago.

"Exploring the Salt Marsh"
"I am probably better known for my portraits and figure drawings, but I love painting the landscape," she said. "There is a degree of freedom in painting the landscape you don't have in the figure.

"I'm enjoying the use of texture, color and light. But whether it's the figure or a landscape, my paintings are always about light and form and mood."

Hours at Beacon Fine Arts, located at 61 Monmouth St., are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday by appointment; Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. For more information, call Beacon Fine Arts at (732) 936-0888.
