Renowned Pop artist has exhibit at Monmouth U

"The Painter and the Boxer"
'Derek Boshier: Extreme Makeover" is on exhibit at the 800 Gallery at Monmouth University in West Long Branch.

The exhibit will run through March 23 at the gallery and is free and open to the public.

Boshier first came to prominence in the early 1960s as part of the British Pop Art movement. During the course of his career, which began as a student at the Royal College of London, he has worked as a painter, object maker, conceptual artist, filmmaker and photographer.

During the late 1970s and 1980s Boshier designed graphic work for David Bowie and the Clash while teaching and painting in Texas.

He has exhibited continuously for 40 years and was the subject of a film called "Pop Goes the Easel."

After a brief stint back in the U.K., Boshier has been working in Los Angeles.

Boshier's work is held in museums around the world including: The Tate Modern, London, England; The High Museum, Atlanta; The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

"Kidnapped"
Most recently, his paintings from the early 1960's were featured prominently in "British Pop," a comprehensive survey of the period at Bilbao Fine Arts Museum.

Hours at the 800 Gallery are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
