The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Children's Festival was held Jan. 30 at the Rebecca Stafford Student Center at Monmouth University in West Long Branch.

The Children's Festival coordinates with area schools to have local children visit the campus and learn about the legacy of Dr. King in a fun and creative festival environment.

Twenty-eight clubs and organizations provided booths with activities celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. King at the festival. Among the more than 200 children who attended were students from Red Bank Charter School, West Side Christian Academy, Red Bank, and Long Branch Middle School.

The Turning Point restaurants in Long Branch, Little Silver, Holmdel and Manalapan are teaming up with LADACIN Network for an "Eat, Drink and Be Caring" fundraiser Feb. 24 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at all four locations. Turning Point has committed to donating a percentage of all the proceeds for the weekend to LADACIN Network.

Diners will be rewarded with complimentary gift certificates and merchandise with a minimum donation of $20 to LADACIN.

LADACIN Network, formerly known as Cerebral Palsy of Monmouth & Ocean Counties Inc., is a nonprofit agency serving over 2,500 infants, children and adults with developmental and multiple physical disabilities in the two-county area.

In addition, Turning Point servers have agreed to donate their time and a portion of their tips to the cause.

"A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines will be discussed by the Adult Book Club of the Ocean Township branch of the Monmouth County Library, 701 Deal Road, Monday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m.

The National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) award-winning novel tells of the relationship forged between a young black man on death row and his teacher in 1940s Louisiana.

The Sea Bright Recreation Committee will sponsor a six-week class in line dancing every Thursday night through March 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sea Bright gym (in the municipal building). Taught by professional line dancing instructor Leslie Clare, participants will learn country, contemporary, pop, and Irish line dancing. Fun for all ages, men and women. Motorists should avoid the area of Route 35 south at Tinton Ave (County Road 537) in front of the main gate of Fort Monmouth. The roadway is down to one lane because of repairs that are being made by New Jersey American Water Co.

Detective Sgt. Thomas C. Clayton, of the Eatontown Police Department, said motorists should use an alternate route and said there is no time frame when the repairs will be completed.

The Brookdale Community College Higher Education Center is teaming up with the Hispanic Resource Center of Monmouth County to host a job fair Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Broadway location in Long Branch.

The event will allow attendees to meet employers, explore job opportunities and participate in free employment-readiness workshops.

Animal lovers are invited to a Valentine's Brunch at the Navesink Country Club in Middletown Sunday, Feb. 11, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are $60. There will be raffle drawings for gift baskets. Funds raised will help defray the cost of caring for lost, abused and abandoned animals at the Monmouth County SPCA in Eatontown.

Six women whose professional, business and community leadership contribute greatly to the quality of life in Monmouth and Ocean counties have been named to receive the 2007 Women of Distinction Award given annually by the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts.

The honorees include Brielle resident Suzanne Citron, founder of the Charles Lafitte Foundation; Tinton Falls resident Doris Crocker, executive director of NJ Haiti Partners of the Americas; Rumson resident Diane Gooch, newspaper publisher; Sea Girt resident Marie Muhler, former Monmouth County surrogate; and Middletown residents Denise Stavola and Luann Stavola, civic volunteers.

The women will receive the awards at the 20th annual Women of Distinction Dinner at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune March 15.
