Seashore Day Camp & School to offer new theater camp

This summer, Seashore Day Camp & School in Long Branch will give children interested in the performing arts a chance to spend summer days "On Broadway."

Seashore will offer a specialty camp called "On Broadway" in its new theater, which happens to be on Broadway in Long Branch. Instead of participating in typical camp activities, boys and girls will have the option of taking acting, singing, dance, set design, costuming, make-up and directing lessons.

The would-be thespians will continue to enjoy a camp tradition by cooling off each day with instruction swim (a mandatory part of the day for all Seashore campers).

Each week of the theater camp will be spent rehearsing for a full-scale production, which will be performed for the entire camp at the end of the season. All campers will have roles in the production. Those interested in other aspects of theater will learn to build sets, sew costumes, do make-up and organize props.

On Wednesdays, participants will broaden their knowledge of theater by going to Broadway plays and productions at the Two River Theater in Red Bank.

The camp will be headed by Renee Harrison and John Gordon, drama majors. They will also bring in specialty acting, voice, dance and costume design professionals.

Sign-ups start at the Day of Fun Feb. 10. For more information, call (732) 222-6464. Seashore, which first opened in 1926 with seven campers, has the distinction of being the first day camp in New Jersey and the pioneer of an industry that has benefited hundreds of thousands of children in Monmouth County. Over the last eight decades, it has grown to become one of the largest day camps in the country, providing innovative recreational activities for approximately 600 boys and girls each year. Seashore was awarded Accredited Camp status by the American Camping Association for 2007.
