Good starts in indoor track for Cox, Nembhard

The Seton Hall Games were the starting line for the 2006-07 indoor track and field season for two of the state's elite sprinters - Monmouth Regional's Chris Cox and Ocean Township's Georgina Nembhard.

A the two-day meet, held in the Sheila and Richard Regan Field House on the campus of Seton Hall University on Dec. 27 and 28, Nembhard proved that she is going to be a triple threat this winter.

The University of Georgia-bound senior finished second in three events. She lost in a photo to Montclair High's Meghan Morris in the girls 55-meter dash, with both sprinters being given the same time, 7.35. In the 200-meter dash, Nembhard's 26.50 was behind the 25.87 of East Orange's Racquel Vassel.

It was Vassel again, in the 55-meter dash that kept Nembhard from the gold. Her 8.82 trailed Vassel's 8.48.

Still, for her first races of the season, the results were just what Nembhard was looking for.

Cox, who starred at Southern Regional last year and has transferred to Monmouth Regional, where he will team up with his twin brother Charles Cox, last year's outdoor NJSIAA Meet of Champions 400 winner, started his Golden Falcon career off with a win in the boy's 400. The senior sped around the Seton Hall track in 50.53, finishing almost a half second up on runner-up Sean Troop of South Shore High (50.76).

Monday, Chris and Charles both ran sub-50 splits on the Golden Falcon's 4x400 relay team that posted a 3:27.1 at Tuesday's Millrose Games qualifier held at Seton Hall. Kelly Fisher and Rashon Verrett ran the opening two legs for the Falcons.

Ocean Township's Willie Rodriguez was third in the boys 55 dash, clocking 6.77 at the Seton Hall Games.

The relay season takes over next weekend with the State Group Championships at the Jersey City Armory. On Jan. 12, Group I boys and girls will compete for state gold. On the Jan. 13, Group II girls go in the morning (8 p.m.) followed at noon by Group III girls. The day ends with Group IV at 4 p.m.

On Jan. 14, the boys take over with Group II at 8 a.m., Group III at noon and Group IV at 4 p.m.

The Monmouth County Relays are Jan. 25 at the new indoor facility at Toms River North.
