The Red Bank Parks and Recreation is co-hosting an adult co-ed half court indoor basketball league (three-on-three) on Tuesday nights beginning Jan. 23 at Red Bank Middle School. The game times will run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The league is open to all Red Bank residents 21 years old and over, and nonresidents are welcome. You can sign up as an individual or put together your own team consisting of five to six players of which two must be female. All ability levels are welcome as this league is for fun. The cost per player is $55 for Red Bank residents and $65 for nonresidents. Mike O’Flaherty and Erica Weitz, who were running stars at their high schools, were the winners at the Freehold Area Running Club’s 18th Toys for Tots 5K held Dec. 10 at Michael Tighe Park, Freehold Township.
O’Flaherty, a Freehold Borough graduate, was the overall winner, clocking 16:41 for the race held inside the park. Runner-up Bob Bythell also broke 17:00, coming in at 16:59. Brian Roche was third overall (17:40), followed by Mike’s brother, Cody O’Flaherty (18:09), and Paul Daniele (18:30).
Rounding out the top 10 were: Harold Nolan (18:48), Eric Dynarski (18:48), Bob Derringer (18:50), James Segal (18:59) and Craig Stackiewicz (19:02).
Weitz, a Marlboro graduate, had to hold off Gabby Barrett to win the women’s race. Weitz posted a 19:42, finishing just two seconds ahead of Barrett (19:44). Weitz was 13th overall and Barrett was 14th.
Third place went to Rachel Morris (20:23).
Manny Eisner (32:47) and Frank Emanuel (33:18) were the first male and female racewalkers.
More than 200 runners and racewalkers competed in the race that made runners bring an unwrapped toy as part of the registration fee. The gifts went to the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots drive.
The Freehold Area Running Club’s 24th annual Winter Race Series will start Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. The series of 5K races at Tighe Park will run through Feb. 4. For more information on the Winter Series or other club events, call (732) 431-2627 or log on to www.farcnj.com.
The Matawan-Aberdeen Recreation Volleyball League is forming its spring 2007 indoor season. The league coordinates and supports two co-ed leagues. League nights are Tuesday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. The B1 league is for advanced players (B-BB or above) and the B2 league is for novice to intermediate level players. Space is limited. The spring season will begin Jan. 9 with league coordination and tryout evening to select players to teams. The B1 tryout will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and the B2 tryout will be held from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Detailed league information and registration for the tryout is on the league’s Web site: www.njvb.com/clubs/hovb. Regular league play begins Jan. 16.
