Two students from the West End School in Long Branch had the honor of leading the flag salute and Pledge of Allegiance during the Nov. 15 meeting of the Board of Education.

George L. Catrambone, assistant superintendent of schools (holding microphone), introduced Ruby Liss and Sa'mir Colbert, fourth-graders at the West End School in Long Branch.

St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Broadway in Long Branch will be serving a free community dinner on Thanksgiving from noon to 2:30 p.m.

The dinner is open to all members of Long Branch, as well as residents of surrounding towns.

Chef Jerome and local volunteers have been preparing and serving the traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner at the church for the past eight years.

The city of Long Branch and Pier Village are hosting the second annual "Holiday Extravaganza" on Nov. 25 at the boardwalk at Festival Plaza at 4 p.m.

The Long Branch Free Public Library on Broadway will be hosting a Book Sale Extravaganza Nov. 24 and 25.

Book sale prices will be 50 percent off and priced as follows: hardcovers, 50 cents; paperbacks 25 cents or six for $1; videos 50 cents; audio books 50 cents; and CDs, $1.

The library will also hold a $2 bag sale from 3 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 25, which will not include CDs.

The Long Branch Health Department and the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey will hold free blood pressure screenings on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Long Branch Public Library on Broadway.

The Long Branch Historical Association (LBHA) will present "President James A. Garfield Nov. 19, 1831 - Sept. 19, 1881" on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall on Broadway.

Historian Jim Foley will be the presenter at the meeting celebrating 175 years since Garfield's birth and 125 years since he died in the Elberon section of Long Branch from a gunshot wound.

The LBHA meeting is free and open to the public.

The Coastal Monmouth Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse will meet on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. in the Stanley Room at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.

The alliance provides Long Branch, West Long Branch and Oceanport community members with prevention, intervention and referral services.

The Long Branch Ronald McDonald House (RMH) on Bath Avenue is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is asking local artists to assist in the celebration by creating art to help raise funds.

The RMH Gala Committee is commissioning works to be created for the its 2007 Gala event on April 21.

The donated works will be displayed and raffled at the gala and all proceeds will benefit the Long Branch RMH.

The art work should feature the Ronald McDonald House or scenes local to Long Branch. For reference purposes, digital photos will be available at RMH. Submissions must be received by Jan. 15.

Artwork can be created in any medium or form; must be framed originals, no prints or photographs; become the property of the RMH; may be used for publicity purposes.

The RMH of Long Branch is a non-profit organization that provides a home away from home for the families of seriously ill children undergoing medical treatment at area hospitals.
