Jewish Film Fest at JCC, Monmouth U.
The Jewish Culture Program of Monmouth University in partnership with the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Deal are presenting the second annual Jewish Film Festival.
Films will be presented throughout the year at Monmouth University's Wilson Hall Auditorium, 400 Cedar Ave. in West Long Branch, and the JCC Performing Arts Center, 100 Grant Ave., Deal Park.
The film schedule is:
"James' Journey to Jerusalem," Nov. 7, 8 p.m., Wilson Hall. The film follows the adventures of a devout Christian making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
"Left Luggage," Nov. 21, 8 p.m. JCC. Set in Belgium in the early '70s, the film is the touching and emotional story of a rebellious philosophy student who finds herself unable to accept her Jewish identity.
"A Time of Favor," Dec. 6, 8 p.m., Wilson Hall. The film weaves an intricate tale of passion, loyalty, and conspiracy amid the contemporary political powder keg of the disputed West Bank.
"The Syrian Bride," Dec. 13, 8 p.m., JCC. Once Mona crosses the border to Syria, she will never be allowed back to her beloved family. This film is a powerful examination of mental and emotional borders and the courage it takes to cross them.
"The Garden of the Finzi-Contini," Jan. 9, 8 p.m., JCC. In the late 1930s in Ferrara, Italy, the Finzi-Contini is one of the leading families, wealthy, aristocratic, and Jewish. The film traces the disintegration of a way of life from privilege to police barriers and rooms where Jews await transport to concentration camps.
"House & A House in Jerusalem," Feb. 13, 7:30 p.m., JCC. Censored by Israeli television, the film chronicles the inhabitants of a residence in West Jerusalem. Followed by a panel discussion.
"Watermarks," March 20, 8 p.m., Wilson Hall. The story of the champion women swimmers of the legendary Jewish sports club, Hakoah Vienna, founded in 1909 in response to the exclusion of Jewish athletes from Austrian sports clubs.
"Paradise Now," April 18, 8 p.m., Wilson Hall. With explosives strapped to their bodies, two young Palestinians slip into Israel, planning a suicide mission. Can anything or anyone change their minds? Followed by a panel discussion.
There will be a $5 suggested donation for the JCC films. All are welcome to celebrate these unique films on past and present Jewish culture.
