Tracey Newenhouse, West Long Branch, trains close to home for the New York City Marathon. She is running in the Nov. 5 race to raise funds to help with medical bills for Malcolm King, 6, an Asbury Park resident who is undergoing treatment for leukemia. The Greater Ocean Township Chamber of Commerce held its annual Halloween parade and costume contest Oct. 28 at the Larkin Place firehouse in Oakhurst. More than 80 ghosts and goblins, farmers, soldiers, policemen, and others participated. The Chamber gave out first-, second- and third-place prizes in three age categories.

Shore Regional High School, West Long Branch, will hold its annual senior class fashion show, "Autumn in New York," Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Seniors will model fashions from local merchants. Tickets are $10, $5 for students, and may be purchased at the door or by calling Lynda Mahoney at (732) 222-5501.

The Monmouth Beach EMS is holding its second annual holiday pie sale at the Monmouth Beach First Aid Squad building, 26 Beach Road. Pies available for sale include apple, chocolate cream, pumpkin, Dutch apple, pecan, and mince. The township of Ocean Environmental Commission will hold a Sky Watch on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. at Weltz Park off West Park Avenue.

Participants will meet at the pool complex to enjoy an educational and fun evening of astronomy with educator and environmental commission member Marc Rogoff. All participants will construct a star chart and view and identify stars and planets in the night sky.

Attendees should bring a lounge chair, flashlight and insect repellent. Telescopes and binoculars are optional.

The Long Branch Historical Association will host "James A. Garfield Nov. 19,1831 - Sept. 19, 1881" on Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at city hall on Broadway. Historian Jim Foley will be the presenter at the event.

The Friends of the Library and Mildred Hitman are sponsoring a talk on "The Architecture of Art Museums" on Nov. 14 at the Long Branch Public Library on Broadway at 7 p.m. Dr. Ingrid Steffensen, of the Rutgers University Speakers Bureau, will discuss her book, "Marble Palaces" followed by a discussion and a slide show of art museums around the world. A book discussion of "The Lighthouse Hunters" will be held at the Ocean Township Branch of the Monmouth County Library, 701 Deal Road, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Authors Christina and Tommy Cardaci will present a visual story of their travels and adventures across the country to photograph more than 1,000 lighthouses. Ocean Shukokai Karate will hold a free one-hour personal safety and anti-abduction seminar Nov. 5 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at its Ocean Avenue location in the West End section of Long Branch.

The training aims to help children defend against physically abusive adults and sexual predators, and parents are encouraged to attend the training with their children.

The session will feature role-playing seminars and will introduce children to physical resistance techniques.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Borough of Monmouth Beach, the Rosary Altar Society of the Church of the Precious Blood will host a Centennial Christmas House Tour on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

The tour will showcase nine historic homes, many of which were the summer residences of Gilded Age tycoons such as the Colgate (toothpaste), Dugan (cupcakes & bread), and Heide (candies) families.

A hospitality center will be set up at the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center, 128 Ocean Ave., where parking will be available. A trolley, based at the cultural center, can transport house tour attendees from house to house if needed.
