Housing Alliance will manage affordable housing
Nonprofit will administer housing program for boro

EATONTOWN - The borough's affordable housing programs will soon be managed by an area nonprofit organization specializing in assisting those needing shelter at a price within their means.

Via a resolution unanimously approved at its Oct. 25 meeting, the Borough Council will contract administrative duties for its forthcoming affordable housing programs to the Monmouth Housing Alliance, an agency that advocates for homes for low- and moderate-income households.

Under the two-year contract, the alliance, located at 59 Broad St. in Eatontown, will receive $6,500 yearly, or a total of $13,000 over the length of the agreement, from the borough to operate the program in accordance with the state's Council on Affordable Housing (COAH) laws.

The funds will be paid out of a trust fund the borough has established to collect developers' fees, a copy of the resolution states.

In return, the coalition will set the eligibility requirements, screen program applicants, check housing units to ensure that they are suitable for living quarters, and help promote deed restrictions on any housing that comes under its purview.

"We feel comfortable aligning with the Monmouth Housing Alliance," Mayor Gerald J. Tarantolo said.

The alliance is also the contract purchaser of Pine Tree Mobile Village, a 133-unit facility located on Route 35 just south of the Monmouth Mall.

Through a resolution passed in June, the council endorsed the alliance's application for funding from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) to purchase the mobile home park, which is pending a sale.

If the sale is completed, the alliance intends to maintain the property as a mobile home park with affordable, rent-stabilized units housing the present occupants, borough officials have said.
