Eatontown ordinance protects tenants

For almost a quarter of a century, the borough of Eatontown has had a Rent Stabilization Contract to protect landlords and tenants of the many apartment complexes and mobile home parks with issues of tenancy. The borough's current four-year rent stabilization contract between the municipal government and landlords was due to expire on Sept. 30. For various reasons the parties involved could not reach an agreement on a new four-year contract.

For only the second time in the history of the rent contract there was a gap left where tenants were left unprotected. To fill that void the borough of Eatontown governing body adopted a Rent Control Ordinance on Sept. 27.

I would like to extend my appreciation and thanks to the borough of Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo and the Borough Council for creating and passing a rent control ordinance to protect the tenants of the borough who represent about 45 percent of the population.

A special thanks to Councilman Charles E. DaVis the council liaison for the Tenant Rights Committee and the Borough Attorney Gene Anthony for having the foresight to create this rent control ordinance to prevent a lapse of protection for tenants, especially in the area of rent increases.
