Eatontown has new police sergeant, officer
Meanwhile, a top-ranked, 2006 graduate of the Ocean County Police Academy has joined the borough's police department as its newest patrolman. Both Sgt. Daniel Guthrie and Officer Bryan J. Mulholland received their new police department pins when they appeared before town officials, apparently proud family members and friends, and police superiors and colleagues at the Borough Council's Sept. 13 public meeting. Borough Police Chief George Jackson and Capt. Jerome Brady led the brief ceremony to introduce Mulholland, who was selected by the council's three-member police committee to replace a now retired officer and to recognize Guthrie, a member of the Eatontown force since 1991. Both men were sworn to their duties by Borough Clerk Karen Siano. According to his biography, Guthrie has been "heavily involved in criminal investigations" for the last year and has worked in the department's detective bureau, first as a juvenile detective for four years, since 2001. Upon his hiring, Guthrie worked in the department's patrol division. In 1999, he was named community services officer, an assignment that included carrying out the duties of the department's Drug Abuse Resistance Efforts (DARE) officer. Guthrie began his law enforcement career in 1985 with the Monmouth County Sheriff's Department, serving first as a corrections officer in the county jail and then as a sheriff's officer, his biography states. About a year prior to joining Eatontown's force, Guthrie conducted undercover drug investigations, according to his biography. Guthrie has carried out each of his assignments with professionalism and enthusiasm, Jackson said. "Dan's been a great police officer," Jackson said. A Toms River resident, Guthrie once attended Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. He is now studying for an associate's degree in criminal justice at Ocean County College in Toms River. When Jackson remarked that Mulholland had ranked fourth in this year's graduating class at the Ocean County Police Academy, the audience voiced their approval. "Pretty impressive," Jackson said. The top candidate of choice of the council's police committee, Mulholland worked this past summer as a Class II Special Officer for the Seaside Heights Police Department, his biography states. "His credentials are pretty impressive," Jackson said. "The police committee made an excellent choice." The Wall Township resident is a volunteer coach for the Colts Neck High School varsity football team according to his biography. Mulholland holds a bachelor of arts degree in history from The College of New Jersey in Ewing, where he played on the school's football team. A 2000 graduate of Wall Township High School, Mulholland played football and wrestled on the varsity during his years there. Both appointments were effective as of Sept. 18 and are subject to a one-year probationary period according to borough documents.
