Notes Around Town

The Arc of Monmouth County held its annual Winter Glow Ball at the Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands on Dec. 2.

Held every December for the past 39 years, the ball benefits The Arc’s programs and services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

This year, 10 percent of the proceeds went to help individuals with developmental disabilities and their families affected by Hurricane Katrina.

A free education and support group will be facilitated by Rita Torres for those caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia/memory deficit. The support group will meet the first Wednesday of the month 7-8:15 p.m. in the parlor of Royal Senior Care, 1041 Highway 36 in the Highlands. To register, call (732) 291-0710, ext. 14.

The Long Branch nominating petitions for the annual school election scheduled for April 18 may be obtained from the Board of Education at 540 Broadway.

The petition must be filed with the board secretary.

Prospective candidates for the school board can obtain a School Board Candidate Kit at the board offices. The kit is published by the New Jersey School Boards Association and includes information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy, campaign procedures, and the role of the school board member.

All persons filing for nominating petitions as candidates for the election must file on or before 4 p.m. on Feb. 27.

The 10th annual Long Branch/Florida Reunion will be held on the Pilgrim Bella Cruises in Del Ray, Fla., on March 4 from 5:30-10 p.m.

Petitions for candidates for the office of Long Branch mayor and council became available beginning Jan. 3 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the City Clerk’s Office at city hall on Broadway.

The municipal election will be held May 9.

Assistive technology workshop at Arc Jan. 9

The Arc of Monmouth, 1158 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, will hold an assistive technology workshop Jan. 9 from 9:30 a.m.-noon.

The free workshop is for parents and educators of special education students. It will be presented by Mike Marotta, an assistive technology practitioner and rehabilitation technologist at Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey. Topics will include adaptive devices and software that could benefit students with disabilities.
