Deadline Jan. 6 to apply for free courses at NJIT

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, has announced a new program — Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP) — for New Jersey high school students eager to learn hands-on science and technology. Application deadline is Jan. 6.

The free program is offering five college courses, which meet Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 28-April 29. Females and minority students are encouraged to apply. To be accepted, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, submit two letters of recommendation from teachers and a 250-word essay describing the student’s interest in science and technology. The spring semester program offers classes in video-game development, electronic devices, chemistry, computer science and real world team-based problem solving.

Local residents graduate from fire academy

The Monmouth County Fire Academy, Freehold Township, announced that 56 volunteers have graduated from its “Firefighter I” class.

The firefighters attended weekend classes and logged 135 hours of course work. Students received training in rescue, fire extinguishment, hazardous materials response, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, electrical safety, and the care of hoses and other equipment.

Graduates from the local area are: Jordan Ali, Long Branch; Oliver W. Fetter, Shrewsbury; Richard A. Gallo III, Oceanport; Andrew C. Gengaro, West Long Branch; Nicholas J. Saffioti, Long Branch; Timothy D. Morrissey, Fair Haven; Jason A. Cardamoni, Eatontown; James T. Pierson, Red Bank; Mow Chu, Ocean Township; Matthew J. Deponti, Fair Haven; and David F. Kawas, Eatontown.

Wheelchairs provided for qualifying individuals
