Pediatricians at the Monmouth Family Health Center on Broadway in Long Branch joined with Reach Out & Read and AmeriChoice on Monday to launch a program to provide free books to their youngest patients during health checkups. The program trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at health checkups from 6 months to 5 years, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. ***** The city of Long Branch and Pier Village will host a Holiday Extravaganza on the Boardwalk of Festival Plaza at Pier Village on Nov. 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will feature Tim McLoone of Holiday Express in concert. A tree lighting will take place, and Santa will be the honored guest in a North Pole setting. ***** The Greater Long Branch Chamber of Commerce and the city of Long Branch has scheduled Emergency Preparedness Night on Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ocean Place Resort & Spa on Ocean Boulevard.
