Bayard Rustin, a Quaker who helped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. organize the historic 1963 March on Washington, is the subject of the documentary “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin,” to be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, in the Shrewsbury Quaker Meetinghouse on Route 35 at Sycamore Avenue, Shrewsbury. On Saturday, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (District 6) will present retired U.S. Army Sgt. James Serano, of Wanamassa, with one of the nation’s highest honors, the Silver Star for Gallantry in Action. The ceremony will be held in the Officer’s Club, Gibbs Hall, at Fort Monmouth on Tinton Road in Tinton Falls.

St. Jerome Church on Wall Street in West Long Branch will mark the beginning of its 50th anniversary with 11 a.m. Mass this Sunday. The parish community will also welcome their new pastor, the Rev. Harold Cullen. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Kenard Tuzeneu, the first priestly vocation from St. Jerome, who has been pastor at St. Mary’s Church in Barnegat since 1992. Residents of the Beachfront North, Phase II, redevelopment zone will hold a walk and rally in support of property rights of all citizens on Oct. 15 beginning at 2 p.m. The rally is sponsored by the residents of MTOTSA (Marine and Ocean Terraces and Seaview Avenue) who are faced with loss of their homes to redevelopment through the process of eminent domain. Representatives of the nonprofit Institute for Justice, Washington, D.C., are also scheduled to attend the rally.
The walk route is from Ocean Terrace to Morris Avenue and back. Following the walk there will be a showing of the film “The Castle.” Rain date is Oct. 22. A new nonprofit community group for people suffering from diabetes is being formed. The All Neighbors Foundation will meet Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Woodrow Wilson Community Center. The Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, will host an evening of 1940s period music and dancing at its annual “Swing Era” Dinner and Dance on Friday, Nov. 4, from 7-11 p.m. at the Fort Monmouth Officer’s Club, Gibbs Hall, Tinton Falls.
The Brookdale Big Band, led by Joe Accurso, will provide music from the swing era. World War II and post-World War II generations are invited to dance the night away and are welcome to come in optional 1940s-style dress.
