The third annual Michael W. Thorne Scholarship 4 Mile Run/Walk sponsored by the West Long Branch Fire Department and its Ladies Auxiliary will take place at Franklin Lake in the borough on May 22 starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds of the race will go directly to fund the scholarship established to honor Thorne, a 20-year-old borough volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty on July 3, 1984.

Franklin Lake is located behind Shore Regional High School off Route 36.

Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. and closes promptly at 8:45 a.m. A kids’ race begins at 9:45 a.m. Awards and random prize drawings will be handed out at 10:30 a.m.

The Asbury United Methodist Church in Long Branch will host an Antique Appraisal Luncheon at 61 Atlantic Ave. May 21, noon to 2 p.m. The cost for the event will be $10. It will include lunch and one item to be appraised. For reservations, call (732) 263-9128.

The Long Branch Housing Authority was be recognized by the Middle Atlantic Region Council in Philadelphia at the annual Spring Conference for receiving five merit awards: Employment/Training Initiative — Step a Head Workforce; Youth Mentoring — “Know What it Takes”; Resident Intervention — People’s Court; Senior Outing — Mothers’ Day Breakfast; Budget/Inventory Initiative — Maintenance Warehouse.

At the Long Branch Board of Education annual reorganization meeting on April 26, Lucille M. Perez was elected to fill a second term as president, and Michelle Critelli was sworn in as vice president.

Violeta Peters, Rose M. Widdis and Joseph E. Sirianni took oaths of office for three-year terms in an uncontested race.

The schedule for the Board of Education meetings, which will be held at 6 p.m. (except as noted) at the high school on Westwood Avenue, is: June 21, July 20, Aug. 17, Sept. 21, Oct. 19, Nov. 16, Dec. 21, Jan. 25 and Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.; March 22 at 6:30 p.m. and the annual reorganization meeting is scheduled on April 25 at 6 p.m.

The Long Branch High School 55th reunion is scheduled for June 25 at the Deal Country Club.

The Arc of Monmouth will host its 7th annual Step Up For The Arc Walk on May 21 at Bucks Mill Park in Colts Neck. Major League Baseball pitcher, Al Leiter will be the celebrity spokesperson.

Registration for the walk beings at 9 a.m. accompanied by a continental breakfast. The walk starts at 10 a.m. led by mascot Eugene the Bear. Walkers may chose to walk any distance from a half-mile to five miles. Tee shirts will be given to anyone who raises at least $50 and prizes will be awarded to walkers that raise $150 or more.

Participants can also dedicate part of the walk to someone special.

Congregation Bros of Israel, 250 Park Ave., Elberon, is having their annual rummage sale on May 22 between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The sale includes clothing, furniture, books, jewelry and attic treasures. Prices will be cut after 4 p.m.

Noted author Helen Chantel Pike will speak at the Ocean Township Museum’s May 24th meeting in the Auditorium, Old Oakhurst School, at 7:15 p.m. Ms. Pike will speak about her new book “Asbury Park’s Glory Days.” An engaging and articulate speaker, Helen Pike has written several books about the Jersey Shore and her work has appeared in a wide variety of publications.

The Greater Ocean Township Chamber of Commerce will hold its 17th annual Business & Retail Expo on May 25 from 5-8 p.m. at the Sheraton Eatontown Hotel. The cost to be an exhibitor is $150 for Chamber members, and $200 for prospective members. The application deadline is May 14.
